Happy Labor Day!!! Do you have any plans? Many people like to have that one last pic-nic before fall and winter arrives. In my hometown of Cincinnati, there is a huge fireworks display down on the banks of the Ohio River. This impressive show has been an annual event for nearly 30 years. I might be off on its length, but it is a fantastic show with the fireworks timed to music. You can tune on your radio to a certain station and hear the music while you watch the fireworks. Even if you are not there, their selection of music is first rate. It is one of the biggest fireworks shows in America, second to only New York City. I remember one year when the kids were younger, taking them downtown to the show. I knew driving and parking would be tough, so we boarded a city bus, dedicated for the purpose, and it took us to the main deck of Riverfront Stadium. As I recall the fare was a dollar per person round trip. I gladly paid it in order not to have to fight the traffic.

Yesterday was a great day at Friendship Harmony. The attendance was right on target for this time of year, and we had a good, Spirit filled service. We sang the song, “Count Your Blessings.” We stopped at the end of each verse, and I randomly chose someone l recount a blessing. It is always good to hear the testimonies of God’s people. After the final verse I opened it up to anyone who wanted to share. What a blessing --- I wish you could have been there to experience it.

Intro: The other day I was asked, “Why does God allow suffering? Why does He allow someone to hurt an innocent person?” This is the age old question which was probably asked by Eve when she buried her son, Abel.

Review: Last week we discovered that sin originated with Lucifer; it did not originate with God. We learned that the reason for suffering is sin. Sin means, “to miss the mark.”
The question is not, “Why is their suffering?” The question is, “Why does God allow suffering? To continue our quest for an answer, we must look at the results of sin.

I. Sin is rebellion.
A. It might be rebellion against nature. Example:. Intentionally setting a forest fire.
B. It might be a sin against mankind. Example:
Adolph Hitler
C. It might be a sin against an individual. Example:
Stealing from someone.
D. Ultimately, all rebellion is against God.
God gave the 10 commandments with His own finger, and with His own mouth.

II. The divisions of law. The Jewish law is divided into three separate and distinct parts.
A. The civil law. These were laws pertaining to the citizens of ancient Israel. They have passed away as that society has passed away. Example:
The laws of Jamestown, Virginia in 1609 are different from the laws in Jamestown, Virginia in 2014.
B. The religious law. These laws pertained to the worship services of ancient Israel. When the veil in the Temple was torn in two at the crucifixion of Christ, the religious laws were fulfilled, thereby rendering them non-binding on believers today.
C. The moral laws are as binding on us today as they were upon Israel in the wilderness when God introduced them.
D. A moral law suggests a moral law Giver. Therefore rebellion against any part of the law is rebellion against Him.

III. Rebel rousers often try to enlist the aid of others in their cause.
A. Lucifer enlisting the aid of a group of angels rebels against God. This rebellion is squashed by God Himself. For the fallen angels there is no redemption.
B. Lucifer next enlists the aid of God’s most special creation: man.
1. Man is not special because of his intellect, man is special because he is the only created being of God, angel or animal who God said, “Let us make man in our own image. Gen 1:26
C. At the point of sin man became under sin’s penalty:
Death. Death means separation from God.
1. The curse. Genesis 3:14-19 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: [15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. [16] Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. [17] And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; [18] Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; [19] In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
2. The continued line of sin. The Apocryphal Book of 2 Esdras says, “For the first Adam bearing a wicked heart transgressed, and was overcome; and all they that be born of him.” 2 Esdras 3:21
3. David the Psalmist would agree when he wrote, “ Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Psalm 51:5
4. Why is there suffering? Because all mankind is fallen and cursed. All of us are capable of horrible acts
5. The antidote is Jesus. Jesus erased the
penalty of sin, the Holy Spirit assists with dealing with the power of sin, and the Father will one day remove the presence of sin.

The Power Of A Mother!!!

Yesterday in my morning message, I gave an example using my papaw, Austin Emery. For you city folks, “papaw” is country for “grandfather.” He died in 1960, but I remember him well. I was his first grandchild, and for a long time, I was his only grandchild. Austin and Ruby Emery were my mom’s parents. They lived in Harlan County, Kentucky in a place called Shields. Back in 1960, the drive from our house in Cincinnati to Shields took seven hours just as hard as you could drive. My papaw Emery thought I was the greatest thing that had ever happened. I never had to ask for anything. All I ever had to do was just look at it, and it was mine. I wasn’t spoiled, I was just very well supplied. One time, we were at their house and a traveling carnival had come. Papaw took me to it, and they had a pony tied to a pole. They gave rides to the kids on the pony’s back. He would walk around in a circle, led by a man while tied to that pole. Papaw told the man to let me ride for as long as I wanted. I do not remember how many circles I made, but I remember I had finally had enough of the ride. I actually rode until I was sick. Papaw asked me if I had liked the pony, and I said yes. He then asked me if I wanted one. What five year old could turn down something like that? Absolutely I wanted one, and I knew I would get it. Remember, I had a pet chicken, so a pony should be no problem. Right? Wrong! Remember, I was a city boy living in the heart of the big city. City boys did not keep horses. They didn’t have pet roosters either, but we did. There was two obstacles to me having my pony. Number one, I have already mentioned; we lived in the city. We had a good sized yard, and to this day I believe we could have done it, but realism tells me no. My number two obstacle was even harder to overcome --- my mom. She said no pony. I couldn’t believe it! I told her, “You can’t tell him no, he’s your dad! You have to obey him!” I was taught I had to obey my parents, so why didn't she have to obey hers? All my arguing was to no avail, until papaw had a great idea. He would buy the pony, put it at his place, and I could come home with them for a few weeks. It seemed like the perfect solution. There was just one obstacle to overcome --- mom. She said no pony, no where. Even at age five I was flabbergasted. Now she is telling her dad he could not buy a pony and keep it at his house. I decided right then if I ever had any children of my own, and they told me I couldn’t have something at my own house, I would knock them into the middle of next month. After all, my papaw and mamaw did not live in the city. They lived in the country. The country is a great place for a horse. Right? Not necessarily! My family did not come from a farm, they came from a coal mining camp. Papaw’s yard in Shields was smaller than our yard in Cincinnati. I was not going to get my pony. This story took place fifty two years ago, and to this date, I have never owned one

One other thing I might mention: remember me saying what I’d do if one of my kids ever tried a stunt like that? Not too many years ago my grandson, Nathan, called me with a problem he was having with his mother. There was something he wanted to do and she had said no. He decided that since I was her dad, I could over ride her, and she’d have to listen. When he told me what it was he wanted, it sounded perfectly reasonable to me. So I spoke to Amanda about it. After all I am the dad, and I have veto power. Right? Wrong! Amanda told me why she had said no. It sounded perfectly reasonable to me, but I’m still the dad and I remembered what I had thought when I was told papaw Emery could not buy me a pony either in Kentucky or Ohio. I appealed to my daughter on behalf of my grandson. Amanda said, “Alright, load yourself on a jet and fly down to Texas, then you handle it.” Poor Nathan, he didn’t have his desire either. However, he did get something good out of it. He’s got some good material for his own blog fifty two years from now.

On a bittersweet note, we said good bye to one of our own this past Thursday. Mary Fields, who had returned to her home place in West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord. Mary had been sick for quite some time, but now she is whole, healed, and happy. Wiley, her husband of sixty one years, will miss her terribly. I ask you to pray the Lord’s comfort for him and their family during this time of sorrow. Remember, in the Bible, death does not mean cessation, it means separation. Although Mary has been separated from us, she has been ushered into the presence of her Lord, Jesus Christ. If that’s not enough to be joyful about, one day she and Wiley will once again be reunited. Although God might separate our loved ones from us, He also specializes in resurrections. As the old song says, “There’s gonna be a great gittin’ up morning one day.” Hallelujah!!

Sharing Some Time With Jude

Good Monday Morning To You!

Set your breakfast on the table and let’s eat and chat. My favorite breakfast is fried eggs, bacon and biscuit and gravy. I don’t like just any biscuits; I like mom’s. Everybody that knows her knows she makes the best home made biscuits around. They do not come from a tube, or a freezer bag. They are hand mixed, and “hand squashed” as Christian comedian Jerry Clower used to say. I like good gravy, but on occasion I like red-eye gravy. I had planned to ask mom to make some last month when I was in Cincy to see her, but my cardiologist got wind of it and threatened bad things if she did. For those of you who know what red-eye gravy is, you perfectly understand. For those of you who don’t, Google it. It’s definitely country eatin’. I Googled it to make sure it was there, and they linked me to Wikipedia.

After last week’s blog, many at church asked me if I brought my gun with me. Several asked, “Did that really happen?” The answer is yes it actually happened, but no I did not bring my gun to church. I really did have a stare down with a vicious critter with a loaded .41 by my side. I’m definitely a good shot. I could shoot the tail off a no-see-um at twenty five yards, but fortunately I did not have to. For those of you who might not have read last week’s Monday Morning blog, stop here and scroll down and read it. I’ll say no more, because I don’t want to spoil it for you.

I was also asked by a very dear friend and colleague about the planned video outreach. He is as excited about it as I am, and has pledged some financial support. As I’ve said, the Lord has burdened my heart about reaching out through the internet to broadcast the morning message. The exact details are still being worked on, but the next step is purchasing the necessary equipment. We need a digital video camera with good sound capabilities. The cost is somewhere in the $300-$500 range. I wish more of you would come along beside us in this venture. If you could, send a check for any amount to Friendship Harmony Baptist Church; 2296 Date Street; St. James City, Florida; 33956. On your check mark “video.” The quicker we get the camera, the quicker we go online. If we receive more than we need, we will be able to upgrade our computer equipment to be more video friendly. I’m told Apple laptops are the way to go. For now, though, we need that digital video camera. I’m not used to asking for money like a radio preacher, but how else would you know? Besides, for those who donate, you become part of it, and God will reward you for it. In my life I’ve discovered you cannot out give God. Please pray about your gift and send it very soon. We need to reach all we can. Right now Monday Morning With Pastor Vic is reaching 9100 homes. I believe with the adding of good quality video, we can far exceed that number.

It sounds like a broken record, but yesterday was another great day at Friendship Harmony. The attendance was good, and the service was exceptional. We sang a congregational song called, “Count Your Blessings.” We sang it “Gratitude style.” That is where you sing a verse then the director stops and calls upon someone to share a blessing. The second verse is sung and then someone else is called on. The song continues that way until the last verse is sung and the director asks if anyone has a blessing to share. Not only is it a good testimony time, but since no one knows who will be called on, everybody starts thinking about received blessings. It’s a fine way of worship.

The morning message came from Jude verses one and two. We looked at Jude’s statement of mercy, peace, and love. We discovered that he didn’t just list these, but did so in a specific order. Mercy is first, followed by peace. You can have no real peace outside God’s mercy. Love then follows peace. You cannot truly love if you have no peace. The sermon notes are below. I hope they are a blessing to you. When we go video, you’ll be able to actually see and hear the message and follow with the notes. Hopefully that becomes a reality soon.

Encouragement From Jude Series 7/5-7/12

Intro: Jude, the half brother of Jesus, writes a short letter of encouragement and warning. He is warning about false teachers and wrong doctrine. False teaching has been a threat to the church since the days of Jude, and his words are still relevant today.

I. Mercy
A. Not receiving from God that which one deserves.
1. In our sin we deserved punishment.
2. God’s punishment is eternal Matthew says it is a place of darkness. Matthew 8:12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
3. He also says it is a furnace of fire. Matthew 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
(a) The logical question becomes, “Doesn’t a fire give off some light? How can it be a place of total darkness if fire illuminates?”
(b) The answer is a phenomenon known as black fire

Black Fire -- This term has only recently been officially recognized. This describes a situation where HEAVY, dense, black smoke is being emitted by a fire. This smoke will be of high velocity, turbulent, high volume, and extremely dense. It will also be hot. For all practical purposes, this is a dense superheated cloud of fuel that is too rich to ignite. The smoke may be doing as much damage as fire. It can (but not always) be a sign of eminent flashover. Old time fire fighters have known of this for years.
4. Luke also gives a ghastly picture.
Luke 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
B. Our sin had to be judged. God’s righteousness would allow for nothing less.
C. A believer’s sins were placed on Christ and He bore the punishment. That is mercy
D. It is also grace; receiving from God that which one does not deserve - forgiveness, and a future with Jesus Christ.

II. Following mercy is peace.
A. You cannot have peace without mercy. You cannot have peace when your soul is stirred with sin.
B. Paul tells us that in our sin we were an enemy to the cross. Philip. 3:18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
C. A sinner might be thinking, “I don’t see myself as God’s enemy.”
D. You might not, but God does.
Romans 8:5-8 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. [6] For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. [7] Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. [8] So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
E. God’s people are promised peace.
Psalm 29:11 The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.
1. David testified that he had peace.
Psalm 4:8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.
F. The Bible calls it an unexplainable peace. Philip. 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

III. After mercy and peace comes love. You cannot love if you have no peace. You can have no peace if you have not received God’s mercy.
Definition of love: Doing right by someone.
A. You can love God.
1. How can one do right by God?
2. Two ways: by trusting Him and following Him.
Hebrews 11:6 /Ezekiel 20:19 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. / I am the Lord your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them;
B. You can love fellow believers. Jude 1:21-22 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. [22] And of some have compassion, making a difference:
1. Note the progression; love for God, then love for others.
2. An unrighteous lawyer agreed.
Luke 10:27-28 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. [28] And he said untohim, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
Note: Jesus told him his answer was right!
REMEMBER: Pity says, “I feel sorry for you.” Compassion (v22) says, “I feel sorry for you and here is what I can do to help.”
C. You can love the unsaved.
Remember, love means doing right by someone.
Jude 1:23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
A. You can love someone without liking what they do, or even liking them for that matter.
B. Modernists say you should never scare someone into Heaven. Jude begs to differ.
1. A sinner needs to be reminded of the reality of Hell.
2. False teachers will tell you that hell is not real. Jesus warned about Hell more than He taught about Heaven.

Conclusion: Have you received God’s mercy? Is there peace in your soul? Do you love in the Biblical manner, by doing right by others? It starts with mercy. You must take that step before you take the next.

Hello from Cincinnati!!

Good Monday Morning To You!

Hello from hot, Hot, HOT, Cincinnati, Ohio. Yesterday marked the fifteenth day in a row of at or above 90 degree temperatures. In two more days, a new record for consecutive days of 90 degrees will be set. The old record dates to 1901. However, before I proceed, I know many of you have been praying for me, and also Bess and the family. First, I want to thank the LORD for allowing me to go on a little further. I also want to thank the doctors and medical staff at the Bethesda North Hospital for the fine care I received. Not only was it top quality, but you could sense genuine human compassion from these good people as well. It is no wonder I chose to be born at Bethesda 57 years ago! I also thank Brenda Conley, and Bill Wolfe for keeping everybody informed. Thanks goes to my family who is even now my best support system. Finally, I thank each of you for your prayers, calls, cards, and E-mails. I was told I was being prayed for from as far away as France. Wow!!!

One thing I learned was how important a visit from the preacher is when you are in the hospital. As a pastor, I have made thousands of hospital, care facility, and at home sick calls. I knew the visits were appreciated, but I had never really considered that those visits were valued and treasured. However, when I became the patient, I quickly saw it from another perspective. I received visits from the hospital chaplain, Thad Griggs, another Southern Baptist colleague. My mom’s Pastor, Brady Clark, stopped by to visit and pray with me. Two of my dearest friends, Pastor Jim Rankin and Pastor Norman Patterson along with their wives, Lisa Rankin, and Chris Patterson came by. Each of these visits was to me a gift more valuable than gold. It sure seems different when you are the one lying in the bed looking up instead of the one who is above the bed looking down.

You do not have to be clergy to bless someone with a visit. Do you know of someone who is confined due to illness, or even age? Plan to make a trip one day soon to see them. Phone calls are nice, and cards are fine, but nothing beats that face to face visit. Go see someone this week.

I have my final cardiology visit here in Cincinnati today at 10:30a.m. Bess and I plan to make our way back to Florida on Tuesday morning. Please pray for our trip; poor Bess will have to do all the driving. Perhaps next week I can tell you a bit more about our journeys, which included visits to some of the winter friends of our Church. It’s always good to see you and visit with you. Thank you for inviting me into your home, office, or wherever we happen to meet. Some people have asked since my last two blogs, “Are you really adopted?” Others, knowing my inability to play it straight said, “Print the real truth about who you are.” The real me is pretty boring, but I’ve decided today to play it straight and tell you some about the real me. First of all, I am definitely not adopted. I was born to Howard and Alene Cooper in Cincinnati, Ohio in the mid-fifties. I grew up in several Cincinnati neighborhoods, but all within walking distance of city limits. Until I was five years old, we did live inside the city. In the late fifties we moved to a little independent village totally surrounded by Cincinnati called Elmwood Place. We stayed there until I finished the sixth grade. If the school had not bought the property, we might be there still. My parents then bought a home in Norwood in which my mom still resides. Norwood, also, is an independent city surrounded by Cincinnati. In fact, I read somewhere that Norwood, Ohio is the largest city in the world to be totally surrounded by another city. That’s pretty cool if its true! The best four years of my life were spent at Norwood High School. In fact, it was one of my teachers, Mr. J. R. Phillips, who instilled in me the confidence that I carry around to this day. As you probably already know I am a Cincinnati Reds fan. Whenever I’m in Cincy, I try to take in a game or two. Often I plan my vacation with the home schedule in mind

As I type these words, Bess and I are in Gainesville, Florida for a four day Bible Conference sponsored by the Florida Baptist Convention. This conference centers around church planting, i.e. starting churches. They will share with us things others have successfully done in the past, as well as ideas that have been tried and that have failed. They gave us some pre-conference materials to study in order to be ready for this intense conference. I am prepared and very excited about these classes. I’m quite tired, though. We left after Church yesterday morning and had a nice trip. We stopped at a rest area and had a picnic lunch with our son Kevin and his student. He is teaching a friend how to drive a semi. Kevin had been home, and was driving to Atlanta to get back to his truck. We used to stop and picnic alongside the road often with the kids when they were little and we were on family vacations. We did it when I was a kid, too.

Yesterday I continued a series of sermons dealing with our relationship with Jesus. The series is titled Jesus Our …. Today we examined the topic, Jesus Our Preacher. Did you ever think of Jesus as a preacher? Yet, He was! The notes are enclosed for your personal Bible study. I do hope they help.

Intro: Today we continue with a series of messages focusing on what Jesus is to us, or could be to you if you have not yet received His love and pardon. We have examined the topic Jesus Our Shepherd. Today we will see Jesus as our Preacher. In the future we will examine Jesus our Teacher, Jesus our Savior and Jesus our LORD.

I. A preacher is…
A. In the OT an assembler; a lecturer.
1. It is used 7 times, all in the Book of Ecclesiastes.
B. In the NT it is used 4 times in four books and means a herald; a proclaimed of Gospel truth.
C. Paul claimed to be a preacher.

II. A preacher warns.
A. Luke 3:7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (John)
B. Matthew 24:1-2 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. 2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
C. Mark 14:27-30 And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. 28 But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
29 But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. 30 And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

III. A preacher proclaims the Good News.
A. Matthew 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
B. John 8:18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
C. John 14:6 / John 15:9 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 15:9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

Conclusion: The Preacher, Jesus’ message is still the same today. Listen as He proclaims the Good News to you.
John 3:16-19 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
